According to a press release issued on June 25, Europol, in collaboration with the UK's South West Regional Cyber Crime Unit, the Dutch police, Eurojust and the UK's National Crime Agency (NCA), have arrested six people suspected of stealing a large sum of money in Bitcoin.
As stated in the press release, the malicious actors used so-called typosquatting, a fraudulent technique to steal their victims' login credentials, by creating a fake phishing website, which usually had a similar name to an already existing site , and then recording the login data.
In this case, the report notes that Europol believes the hackers were able to use typosquatting to steal login details, which gave them access to their victims’ digital wallets and the money inside. Europol says the hackers used this method to steal Bitcoins from at least 4,000 users in 12 different countries.
The six individuals found guilty are based in the UK and the Netherlands, according to the investigation. According to the report, Europol coordinated with the British and Dutch agencies, who shared information and evidence with their headquarters before the arrests.
As previously reported by Cointelegraph, malware watchers have found a Cryptohopper clone website that was stealing users’ login credentials. The website uses the same logo as the original Cryptohopper website to trick users into installing its executable, which downloads and performs mining, while also distributing Trojans designed to steal cryptocurrencies.
