According to UBX Cloud, a company has been blackmailed by hackers who planted ransomware on its systems and demanded $150,000 in order to regain access to its files. The company's name was not disclosed, but we do know that it is an IT.
Hackers attacked the RMM (remote monitoring and management software) and a cybersecurity management dashboard to infiltrate the company's systems and extend the ransomware to end-customer systems, MSSP Alert reported.
The main target of the attack was login credentials and not any kind of product breach.

UBX Cloud's research into the attack states the following:
“Approximately 30% of end-user systems affected by the attack were quickly restored because the victims of the attack used UBX Cloud’s Veeam off-site backups, which allowed these users to recover their systems in less than 30 minutes. However, recovering the remaining 70% of the affected systems cost the company over $150,000 in bitcoinsin order to gain access to the decryption keys needed to recover the data that was not protected by backups.”
UBX Cloud did not name the company or say whether the company was able to successfully decrypt the data. At least three such companies have been victims of this attack, according to research by Huntress Labs. Among the victims is IT By Design, according to CRN.
This attack comes just days after a ransomware attack in the city of Riviera Beach, Florida, where the city was forced to pay hackers $600,000 to recover its systems.
Among other things, this attack raises concerns in the IT service provision sector.
