The Israeli army attacked the offices of the Hamas organization in response to an alleged cyber attack it received.
Specifically, Israeli military forces bombed a building in the Gaza Strip. As they themselves state, the reason for this was that members of the Hamas organization attempted to attack Israeli systems.
Before attacking the building, they had already brought the cyberattack under control. With this move, however, they managed to eliminate all efforts of the organization and destroy the space where the IT professionals were working.
The military said on Twitter that it had foiled an attempted cyberattack by Hamas on Israeli targets. It also said it had targeted the building where the attackers were working. According to the statement on Twitter, HamasCyberHQ.exe no longer exists.
This is not the first time that a physical attack has been carried out in response to a cyberattack. However, it is not something that happens every day. Typically, the US uses military forces to respond to cyberattacks. For example, in 2015, they tried to kill British-born hacker Junaid Hussain, who belonged to the hacking . Hussain had stolen data from US military forces and released it online.
However, the difference between the US attack and the Israeli attack is that Israel reacted immediately. It did not prepare the bombing. The US first made a plan, which could take weeks or even months.
However, Ian Thornton-Trump, head of security at AmTrust Europe, believes that, although there was no plan, the Israelis certainly targeted the building because they were sure the cyber attack was coming from there.
