A new ransomware attack is coming to the fore. This time, hackers are targeting GitHub repositories. The hackers have gained access to GitHub accounts with the aim of attacking the code repositories. They then demand money in the form of Bitcoin from the account holders .
If someone does not pay the amount requested, the hackers threaten to use the codes for their own purposes or sell them.
The number of GitHub repositories that have fallen victim to the attack is 392. The hackers informed that the amount they want is 0.1BTC, or approximately $558 for each.
In addition to GitHub, there are other companies that have been attacked by these hackers, and these are GitLab and Bitbucket.
Hackers have searched for specific services that contain weak passwords and credentials and used them to log into accounts. Then, once logged in, they attack the code repositories.
GitHub said in a post that some users' credentials have been compromised and that it is already working with those users to restore and protect their accounts.
As some at Bitbucket claim, around 1,000 users by this attack. However, because there are many public and unused repositories on GitHub, it is not certain whether any important code was compromised.
Bitbucket plans to restore the affected repositories soon, as do other companies that fell victim to the attack.
A check of the hackers' bitcoin address showed that no one had paid the requested amount. However, GitHub, following the attack, wants to offer its users as much security and protection as possible, which is why it is introducing two-factor authentication.
