Sometimes caring for the elderly can be difficult. You may need outside help to make sure they get what they need, especially when you're working or away from home. But now, scientists are preparing a smart robot – a machine that can help the elderly with their daily tasks, giving them the ability to live independently.
Robotic Activity Support for daily assistance
Researchers from Washington State University have developed a Robotic Activity System, which uses smart home technologies to detect activities and assist with various tasks.
The system uses sensors to detect elderly people, analyze what they are doing, and determine when they may need help.
If they need help, the smart robot walks towards them and displays instructions in video.
In addition, the smart robot can guide the elderly.
Along with on-screen instructions, the robotic system, developed by the researchers, is also capable of moving around rooms to guide seniors to their medication or snacks. It will be programmed to avoid any obstacles or objects in its path.
During testing, the smart robot garnered positive reviews.
In a recent test with 26 college students, the smart robot garnered positive reviews. Participants were asked to perform tasks, such as getting ready to walk the dog or taking medication, while the team evaluated how the robot responded.
As expected, the smart robot detected participants' attempts to perform the tasks assigned to them, using smart home sensors, and successfully moved around the space to assist them.
The Robotic Activity System offered detailed video instructions for tasks
After heading towards the target person, the smart robot provided video instructions regarding the task, which the participants failed to perform.
It had an easy-to-use touchscreen that students could use to see the next step of the task, watch the entire video, or move to objects required for the task, such as a glass of water or the dog's leash.
A promising technology to support the elderly
Although the project is in its early stages, its success in the pilot phase indicates that the future of elder care is indeed bright.
The company could improve the robot's capabilities to ensure it handles all requirements efficiently.
This means that in a few years, you will be able to have a real robotic guardian to help your grandparents.
