Google Pixel 3 modders speed up wireless charging. There's a risk

wireless chargingThe Google Pixel 3 series, the latest flagship devices to hit the market from Google, came out last year with a number of significant changes. One of those changes was wireless charging, which set the device apart from the rest in 2018. The company also launched its own Qi-certified wireless charging , the Pixel Stand, to go along with the Google Pixel 3 series. However, the feature comes with a problem, as previously noted.

Google Pixel 3 and 3 XL users using uncertified chargers are limited to a slow wireless charging rate of 750mAh. However, it seems that some modders on the popular development forum and website XDA Developers have figured out a way to increase the wireless charging speed on uncertified chargers, although it is not as fast as on certified ones. However, according to a report by XDA Developers, the mod almost doubles the charging speed on uncertified wireless chargers. One thing to note here is that the report states that the mod “could be dangerous.”

The reason why modding and increasing the charging speed on uncertified wireless chargers is dangerous is that some factors could cause harm to the user, the smartphone, the charger, or the nearby environment. As noted in the report, the slow speed may be due to the heat generated during charging by uncertified chargers compared to certified chargers.

According to modder 'kOrner', users need to modify the value of "voltage + max" to 9000000, from the default value of 5000000. Charging should be done at the value "/sys/class/power_supply/wireless". The modder noted that this increases the charging speed to 1,290mA, from 750mA. One thing to note, however, is that the value will revert to the default so regular users will need to make the changes when charging begins.

However, if users want to make it more permanent, the only way to do so is with the help of “Advanced Charge Control”, a Magisk module after rooting and installing the Magisk framework. After doing this with the steps below, the user needs to change the value in onPlugged=. /Wireless/voltage_max to “9000000”.
