Facebook announced yesterday that it exposed the private posts of 14 million users for a few days last month.
From May 18 to May 22, while Facebook was testing a new feature, private posts from 14 million users made during that time automatically appeared because the user’s privacy settings weren’t working.
Facebook reportedly fixed the bug, and by May 27, everything was back to how it was before. Before May 27, however, someone could have shared your private post publicly.
Starting Thursday, Facebook began notifying affected users and asking them to review the posts they made during that nine-day period.
“To be clear, the bug did not affect older posts,” privacy officer Erin Egan said in a statement. “We would like to apologize for this error.”
The error reportedly occurred when Facebook was testing changes to “featured” posts. According to the company, everything has been restored. However, the story reminds us that the internet is not a place that helps keep secrets, so it would be a good idea to take this very seriously the next time you try to hide something…
