Windows 10 Version 1809 comes with a huge calculator

The Windows Calculator app has received several improvements in the recently released Windows 10 October 2018 Update, but one change that comes without prior announcement concerns the actual dimensions of the window.

For some reason, the Windows 10 Calculator app now takes up almost the entire screen when it first runs, and as you can see in the screenshot here, almost everything is huge, including the history and memory.

Windows

Obviously, these huge dimensions of the Calculator window are exactly the right choice on touch devices where performing math operations with touch input would be much easier, but on computers where the mouse and keyboard are still the favorite choices of users, it looks awkward.

Needless to say, for users coming from Windows 7 or older, the change is unexpected, especially considering how the Windows calculator looked about ten years ago.

The old calc.exe was pretty much the calculator most users needed, and while it's not necessarily a bad thing that the app itself has evolved in Windows 10, a UI that makes sense for every device would be more than welcome.

However, as BetaNews notes, users can manually adjust the size of the Calculator app window by simply clicking and dragging the edges of the app. This is a significant improvement from Windows 8, where this wasn't possible and Modern apps only worked in full screen.

If you have already updated your system to the Windows 10 Calculator app, you can try the new version of the app yourself, simply by launching it from the “Start” menu.

As a side note, the October 2018 Update is available as a manual download for now, and you just need to check for updates in Windows Update to start the process.
