Removing "Don't Be Evil" from Google's Code of Conduct

codeWhen Google was reorganized after the creation of Alphabetback in 2015, the new parent company created a new motto for itself – “Do the right thing.” However, Google’s unofficial motto remained “Don’t Be Evil.” The company has kept it as part of its corporate code of conduct since 2000.

In a recent development, however, Gizmodo revealed that Google has removed the phrase “Don't Be Evil” from its Code of Conduct. According to the findings, the updated version of the website, which was originally discovered by the Wayback Machine, has a notable change.

Its older version had many references to the phrase throughout its page, such as:

  • "Don't be evil." Googlers generally apply those words to how we serve our users.
  • "Don't be evil" is much more than that
  •   The Google Code of Conduct is one of the ways we put "Don't be evil" into practice

On the new page, there is only one reference to the phrase in the last paragraph, which says:

"And remember... don't be evil, and if you see something that you think isn't right – speak up!"

Despite this major change to the Code of Conduct, the page states that it was last updated on April 5, 2018.
