Nearly 700 million users are running Windows 10

Nearly 700 million users are running Windows 10 on their computers, according to Windows chief Terry Myerson.

Additionally, commercial use of the new operating system has improved by 84% year-over-year, Myerson said in his farewell letter posted on LinkedIn, and the Windows Insider program now has nearly 15 million members.

Windows 10

“Xbox One has Windows 10 core, Surface is currently the top PC, HoloLens is bringing innovations to computer vision, the Microsoft global store gives access to Xbox GamePass, the Office offering and the OEM system are being refreshed, bringing profitable growth. All of this is driving the growth of Windows 10. Last year, we finished the year with over $8 billion in operating income from our division,” says Myerson.

According to third-party data, while Windows 10 adoption is growing, this version still has not surpassed Windows 7 worldwide.

NetMarketShare data shows that Windows 7 is the number one desktop operating system with a 41.61% share, while Windows 10 is second with 34.06%. Windows 8.1 is third and far behind with 5.66%.

With Windows 7 reaching the end of support in January 2020 and Windows 10 receiving new updates, a shift in positions is expected in the coming months, especially as more businesses complete the upgrade to the latest version of Windows 10.

At the same time, Microsoft is also working on improving Windows 10, and new releases bring features that are based more or less on user feedback.

The company has committed to a release schedule that includes two major OS each year, with the next in line being Redstone 4, which is scheduled to launch in the first half of April. Windows 10 Redstone 5, on the other hand, is under construction and is scheduled for release in the fall.
