Facebook is already facing enough problems, with multiple fronts opened against it. And Mozilla is delivering another blow, in the form of a Firefox extension called Facebook Container.
Mozilla has designed the addon to make it harder for the social media platform to track its users' data whenever it wants. The company says it relies on technologies that have been around for years to help manage privacy and security.
The extension won't be able to stop Facebook from tracking your behavior on the social network itself. What Facebook Container will do is prevent Facebook from tracking your online activity outside of its system.
How does Facebook Container work?
After installing the extension, it logs you out of your Facebook account and deletes all related cookies. When you log back into Facebook, the extension will run it in an isolated container. The tab color will be blue in this case.
After logging in, you can use Facebook as usual. But when you click on a non-Facebook link or visit a non-Facebook website from the URL bar, it will load outside the container. This will prevent Facebook from tracking you across other websites via third-party cookies. It will be harder for Facebook to send you ads and other targeted messages.
However, there are some downsides. If you use your Facebook account to log in to different websites, you may experience issues. Also, Facebook's built-in comments and Like buttons on webpages that appear in other browser tabs will not work.
It goes without saying that Facebook Container will only prevent tracking if you use Firefox. If you log in to Facebook through other browsers or devices, there is no point in installing the tool.
