Intel plans 5G laptops in 2019, partnering with Microsoft, Dell, HP, Lenovo

computersIntel company has partnered with Microsoft, Dell, HP, and Lenovo to create Windows laptops with 5G connectivity through its commercial 5G XMM 8000 series models. These laptops are expected to be released sometime in 2019.

The news comes just a day after Qualcomm announced the list of carriers for Windows 10 Always Connected PCs powered by ARM. At the upcoming MWC 2018, Intel will give a glimpse of the first Windows Always Connected PC with 5G. However, their new PCs, with an early 5G modem, will be powered by 8thGen Intel Core i5 CPUs.

The 5G standard is designed to take the wireless experience to another level, exploring capabilities that are unheard of in the current scenario. For example, it could be used to deliver an unexplored VR experience on the go or let users download a 250MB file in seconds.

What 5G can do will be seen when it hits the real world. Most networks around the world struggle to even reach 50 Mbps. According to a recent report by OpenSignal, countries like India have an average 4G LTE speed of just 6 Mbps.

In addition to its 5G dream, Intel will also be introducing the first laptop with 802.11ax WiFi capabilities. Last month at CES, Asus announced its new RT-AX88U 802.11ax WiFi router with support for speeds up to 6Gbps.

The company will also demonstrate eSIM functionality, which is already supported by its enterprise and consumer PC modems released since September 2017.
