Windows 10: In most cases, finding a computer's serial number is usually found under the product label on the computer, as manufacturers typically print all the necessary information for identification in a prominent place.
But if for some reason the sticker is missing, then finding your device's serial number is not as easy as we mentioned above.
Fortunately, there is a way to find it as Windows has comprehensive tools for displaying the serial number. And all you need to do is run Command Prompt or PowerShell.
Note that knowing the serial number is quite important since it offers information about the device model, the date of manufacture, and other data that could be useful in diagnosing a possible problem.
An important note. Older computers may not have the serial number stored in the BIOS or UEFI firmware, making the following commands ineffective. In this case, you will see the following message “To be filled by OEM” so your only solution is to contact the manufacturer.
In Windows 10 Fall Creators Update , PowerShell is the preferred option and replaces Command Prompt in the Win+X menu (Command Prompt is still available). So, it's up to you which one you want to use.
Command Prompt: Launch the command prompt from the Start menu and copy one of the following commands:
Get-WmiObject win32_bios | Format-List SerialNumber
—
gwmi win32_bios | fl SerialNumber
The serial number appears in the same command prompt window regardless of the application, and you can easily copy and save it for future reference.
