iPhone X Face ID hacked again

Apple claims that the iPhone X's facial recognition system is much more secure than the Touch ID fingerprint sensor, but the evidence suggests the opposite.

Vietnamese cybersecurity firm Bkav , which created a mask capable of hacking facial recognition, is back with a new project called "artificial twin" that proves that it is very easy to bypass the facial recognition system on the iPhone X.

To show how effective this new mask is, they permanently reset the Face ID settings and re-enrolled the face on the iPhone X, just to prove that the artificial two-sided mask can unlock the device.

The mask was created with a 3D printer, using eyes made from 2D infrared images that are glued to the printed model.

“From a cybersecurity perspective, this is not safe and we need to raise the level of severity of Face ID security. This means it is not safe for all of us to use Face ID in business transactions,” the company says.

Without a fingerprint sensor, the only way for iPhone X users to protect their devices if Face ID isn't set up is to use the passcode, although this is clearly a less convenient method.

Apple has never commented on these tests that show the shortcomings of its facial recognition system, and the company is left with a 1:1,000,000 chance of someone else unlocking an iPhone X.
