Google: Cybercrime Prevention

Tip 1: Keep your browser and operating system up to date.

Most operating systems will notify you when it's time to upgrade. Don't ignore these messages. Older versions of software can sometimes have security issues that attackers could exploit to easily gain access to your data.

Google's Chrome browser automatically updates to the latest version every time you launch it, so you always have the most up-to-date security protection without any extra effort.

Tip 2: Be careful where you click and what kind of downloads you make.

You may unwittingly click on a link that installs malware on your computer. To keep your computer safe, only click on links and downloads from websites you trust. Do not open any unknown file types or download programs from pop-ups that appear in your browser.

Also, carefully read the details in the footnote and any pre-selected checkboxes during download. Make sure you understand what programs will be installed.

How Google can help keep your devices secure

While some attackers may seek to steal your information, such as your bank account details, email inbox, or online passwords, others may seek to gain control of your device – your computer, tablet, or phone.

Attackers can then use your device to locate other devices, which they can control. They often use a multitude of computers to take websites offline or compromise their security systems.

One of the most common ways attackers can gain control of your computer is by installing malware, or malicious programs. You can help protect your computer from malware, but Google also works to help protect you, with hundreds of security experts working around the clock to ensure your data and devices are safe.
