Windows XP hasn't been upgraded since 2014, but that doesn't say much about Metropolitan Police , which is in no hurry to upgrade to a newer operating system. ![]()
Local police officers still run Windows XP on 18,000 of the 32,751 computers they have in total.
On the other hand, Mayor Sadiq Khan says that the upgrade to supported versions of Windows is already planned, but without specifying the exact date.
Of course, meeting deadlines is not something that characterizes the Met Police as the police force originally planned to upgrade all computers to Windows 8 by March 2016, which never happened.
So because they were not consistent with their original statement they decided to complete the transition to newer versions of Windows. Don't rush though, Windows 10, no, didn't cross their minds. The Met Police decided that the most suitable option is Windows 8.1.
But even this transition seems to be hitting a snag. Many are hoping that the upgrades will be made before new attacks like Wannacry and Petya , which pose huge threats even to advanced Windows systems.
"The Met Police are working on upgrading the software but it is currently a difficult feat. It is essential that the police are given the appropriate financial resources to prevent future cyber attacks," says Steve O'Connell.
Currently, only 8 police computers run Windows 10, Microsoft's latest operating system that is considered the most secure. Windows 8.1 will continue to receive security updates until 2023.
