Open source cars? Toyota's new model runs Linux

Linux is everywhere, so it shouldn't come as a surprise that Toyota's new model will run a Linux-based platform called AGL (Automotive Grade Linux).

Toyota Motor Corp said on Wednesday that the infotainment system of its updated Camry model, which will be launched in the United States, will run on an open-source technology platform based on Linux.

This category also includes the navigation system (GPS). This system can also be used to support advanced technologies, including self-driving features, voice command support, and other connected car services. [/su_note]

Toyota is among 10 automakers working with suppliers and technology companies to jointly build the Automotive Grade Linux platform. AGL is essentially an open source platform for vehicle applications that automakers can customize, eliminating the need to develop systems from scratch for each new vehicle model.

The platform, developed in collaboration with Mazda Motor Corp., Suzuki Motor Corp., Daimler AG and other automakers, will reduce development time and costs and create a standardized platform for integrating new features into car interiors, including image, audio and navigation applications. The platform can also be used for advanced functions, such as self-driving functionality, as well as other connected car services.

Fan Fact! Cars typically require more than 100 million lines of code, as automakers try to incorporate as much technology as possible to attract more buyers. For this reason, programming is the most difficult part of vehicle development and takes years, compared to the few months it takes tech companies to develop apps. In addition, it is a process that requires constant updating to keep up with technological developments.

The latest Camry model, which will be released in the coming months, will use the AGL platform to run a suite of on-board applications, with the Japanese automaker planning to expand the platform to other Toyota and Lexus models.
