CentOS 7: The CentOS operating system is developed by a community of open source contributors. Typically, CentOS users are companies and individuals who do not need strong commercial support for their operating system.
CentOS is a 100% compatible rebuild of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, fully compliant with Red Hat's distribution requirements. CentOS is for those who need the stability of an enterprise-class operating system without the cost of certification and support.
Since 2014, Red Hat has been funding CentOS, which allows the development team to maintain its open-source nature.
CentOS 7 is a great choice for home use, even on a laptop that is not Linux-friendly. It will work flawlessly despite the challenges. Addressing the challenges is also the downside of CentOS, as it lacks the support of Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
This means it's not for you to want everything ready.
Different distributions have out of the box support for your computer's hardware. Ubuntu and generally Ubuntu-like ones are more media-friendly, and have better support for working with smartphones. CentOS does the basics much better, and that means stability, consistency, and absolute support for any hardware.
CentOS has the temperament of the enterprise and does not use new technologies for more stability, but all problems-challenges are solvable. You can fix everything, and there will be no surprises waiting for you the next day.
I installed CentOS 7 on an HP Pavilion g6. I should mention that I spent a lot of time and energy to get the operating system where I wanted it.
This is something that we cannot ignore. However, its performance is not compromised and the result was definitely worth the effort and time.
I chose this particular distribution because I wanted a local installation of Plesk Panel, on a machine that I use for web hosting testing and web development.
This means I wanted a local web server with a functional desktop (I chose Cinnamon) that has the operational consistency of Red Hat.
I could have used the latest Fedora distribution, but I chose stability over cutting edge applications.
It took a lot of work to get proper network support and some additional repos, to add new software, codecs, drivers for other file systems and protocols, and whatever else you can imagine.
CentOS installation and configuration only happens once. For me, this is very important for production machines.

CentOS 7 will not disappoint you if you are willing to build a machine the way you want it from scratch, no matter what hardware you have. CentOS 7 manages to deliver a workstation system that simply works.
Let's mention once again that every fix is permanent and will not break with the next update.
