Surprises from Apple , which in addition to announcing a new iPhone 7 and 7 Plus in red, also announced a new iPad that will replace the current iPad Air 2. The iPad presented by Apple today is very similar to the iPad Air 2, but has some differences.
Apple's new iPad comes with an A9 chip and a brighter Retina display. Apple simply called the new tablet "iPad" after the company decided to discontinue the Air 2. The device is a 9.7-inch tablet and its prices start at $329 for the 32GB variant and go up to $429 for the model with 128GB of storage.
The tablet doesn't have a fully laminated display and some anti-reflective coating, but it does have a resolution of 264ppi at 2048×1536. It comes with an 8MP iSight rear camera and a 1.2MP front-facing camera with FaceTime features.
The new 9.7-inch iPad features two speakers, a Lightning connector, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. It also features Touch ID with support for Apple Pay, Bluetooth 4.2, and 802.11ac Wi-Fi.
“New customers and those looking to upgrade will love this new iPad for use at home, school, and work, with its beautiful Retina display, powerful A9 chip, and access to more than 1.3 million apps designed specifically for it,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing.
Pre-orders for the new device begin this Friday via Apple.com and Apple Stores.
