Checker is preparing retro limousines for today's roads

Checker is back. A Massachusetts auto parts company has secured the rights to use the classic brand on new cars it will build. cab

So far, all we have are sketches for two prototypes, but it's clear that the classic Checker look is making a comeback on today's streets.

But the Checker Marathon (the classic New York taxi), won't be exactly the same.

According to photos published by The Verge, the first model of the limousine will have six doors, for 12 passengers.Checkers 1

It is based on the design of the original Aerobus Checker model from the 60s and 70s but looks quite strange. It could be used with a tour guide or by very large families.

Both models will have a steel chassis and body, maintaining the bulletproof look and feel of the original models.

The new cars will be built by Checker only to order (the original Michigan company stopped producing vehicles in the 1980s).1

The first prototypes will hit the road next year, and full production is scheduled for 2018.

According to The Daily News, the company plans to build about 100 of each model. The vehicles will sell for between $50,000 and $70,000.
