Microsoft bought Havok

Microsoft has acquired Havok, a game development company that was previously purchased by Intel for a respectable sum.Havok

Intel bought Dublin-based Havok, known for its physics engine, in September 2007 for $110 million.

Havok has worked with leading game publishers and developers, such as Microsoft Games Studios, Sony Computer Entertainment, Nintendo and others, for over 15 years.

Havok's physics technology is designed to provide real-time collision detection, in three dimensions.

Microsoft announced today the acquisition of Havok:

“We welcome Havok to the Microsoft family. We will continue to work with developers to create better games with Havok’s development tools. We believe Havok is a fantastic addition to Microsoft’s existing tools and platform components for developers, including DirectX 12, Visual Studio, and Microsoft Azure.”

Even though Microsoft's leadership is readjusting the company to cope with a much more demanding market, always focusing on the core software and services that have made Microsoft famous, the company doesn't seem to be abandoning gaming.

Microsoft seems to see gaming as a key way to maintain its presence on iOS, Android devices, and other non-Microsoft platforms.
