Your system is usually protected by some Anti-Malware and/or Anti-virus, but few security suites use ASLR and DEP technologies . Let's see what AV-Test says .
Testing by independent security lab AV-Test.org shows that few security applications consistently use important techniques to protect consumers' systems. We're publishing the results because you need to know.
The main techniques mentioned above are DEP (Data Execution Prevention) and ASLR (Address Space Layout Randomization) . DEP protects against exploits that target buffer overflows, usually by using CPU functions to mark certain areas of memory as non-executable. ASLR protects against attempts to execute code to gain privileges at known memory locations by detecting executable code at load time .
Among the consumer products AV - Test chose to test, only ESET Smart Security 8 hit 100 % in detecting executables , although Avira Antivirus Pro and Norton Security both scored above 99 %. Six other products were above 90 %.
Among the business security solutions tested by AV - Test, only Symantec Endpoint Protection detected 100% of threats , leaving G Data AntiVirus Business just behind . Products from Sophos, McAfee, Bitdefender, Kaspersky and F-Secure followed.
It is worth noting that many products have shockingly low protection rates , such as Trend Micro OfficeScan with 18.7% and Scan IS with 17.5%.
