Pioneer has announced that it has begun development of a new Blu-Ray disc with a capacity of 256GB , which is four times that of a Blu-Ray XL disc , which offers the largest capacity to date.
This new optical disc has 8 layers with a total capacity of 256GB without being formatted, with Pioneer stating that in the future it is possible to achieve capacities of up to 512GB.
Following the announcement of a magnetic medium with a capacity of 185 TB by Sony, Pioneer wanted to evolve Blu-Ray, thus offering a new solution for backing up large files to optical media.
In addition to Pioneer, Sony and Panasonic announced the Archival Disc, to create an optical disc with a capacity of 300GB, but with the disadvantage that it is not in any known standard (DVD, Blu-Ray), as a result of which there are still no devices for playing or recording data.
Therefore, Pioneer 's solution appears to be the best at the moment, because Blu-Ray has matured with several proposals on the market and ultimately the optical media and drives will be more affordable than the Sony - Panasonic proposal.
