Two cases of "piracy" of subscription satellite services were identified by the Economic Police and Cybercrime Prosecution Service
As part of a coordinated police operation in the wider Corinth area, two Greek citizens, aged 42 and 57, were arrested
The arrested individuals were illegally "distributing" a television signal from subscription services to an unknown number of internet users who possessed special decoding devices, resulting in the required monthly subscriptions not being paid to the provider companies
The Economic Police and Cybercrime Prosecution Service identified two more cases of "piracy" of subscription satellite services in Corinth.
In particular, in the context of a coordinated police operation by the Cybercrime Sub-Directorate, two Greek citizens, aged 42 and 57, were arrested the day before yesterday (18-07-2013) in the morning in Corinth and Loutraki, Corinth, respectively, and a case file was opened against them for violation of the legislation on intellectual property by profession and the legislation on the protection of subscription services by profession and by continuation. In addition, a case file was opened against the 57-year-old for the offense of disobedience.
More specifically, the investigation of the cases began following a lawsuit filed with the Cybercrime Prosecution Sub-Directorate by an attorney-at-law of a company providing services to electronic mass media. The lawsuit concerned satellite "piracy" of the services provided by the company, through the illegal distribution of their television signal to a large number of "subscribers".
The online police investigation, which was carried out in the context of lifting the secrecy of communications, identified the involvement of these individuals and verified their electronic traces.
Specifically, in the first case, the digital investigation revealed that the 42-year-old had put into operation a network satellite decoder - server, on which he had installed illegal software and was illegally distributing electronic decoding - decryption "keys" to an unknown number of internet users. In this way, they provided users with the ability to watch subscription channels, without paying a subscription to the provider company.
In a search conducted at the store owned by the 42-year-old in Corinth, a connected satellite receiver was found, with which the subscription channels of the complaining company were viewed and shared.
During the investigation, the following were also found and seized:
- fifty-three (53) digital television signal decoding cards,
- twenty (20) network digital receivers,
- one (1) external storage unit (USB stick),
- two (2) internal hard drives
In the second case, from the digital investigation that was carried out, it was found that the 57-year-old had put into operation a network satellite decoder - server, on which he had installed illegal software and was illegally distributing, to an unknown number of internet users, electronic "keys" for decoding - decrypting the subscriber services of the complaining company.
In a search conducted at the 57-year-old's home in Loutraki, Corinth, in the presence of a judicial officer, a satellite receiver was found, which was used for viewing and sharing the decoding "keys".
Specifically, during the search of the 57-year-old's home, the following were found and seized:
- One (1) laptop computer.
- Two (2) digital satellite receivers.
The seized digital evidence, in both cases, was sent to forensic laboratories for the necessary laboratory tests.
