Ubuntu Forums have been breached by hackers . The company behind the popular open-source Linux operating system admitted to the breach on Saturday .
In a statement posted on its forum homepage, Canonical confirmed that there had been a breach and that the team was working to restore normal operation.
The announcement said that “every user’s IP address, username, passwords and emails” were stolen from their database. The company confirmed that while passwords are not stored in plain text, users who use the same passwords on other websites should change them.
"Ubuntu One, Launchpad, and other Ubuntu and Canonical are not affected by the breach," the company said.
It is estimated that there were 1.82 million registered users on the Ubuntu forums and there were over 1.96 million posts. So imagine the information the hackers got their hands on.
The forum uses vBulletin, a popular forum application, but it does not appear to offer security.
The website was immediately compromised by hackers after the data was breached and stolen . On the homepage, they placed a photo of a Twitter user with the nickname “Sputn1k_.” This account has only five tweets and 59 followers.
