Hackers from the Syrian Electronic Army have breached the systems of Tango (tango.me), a leading mobile messaging service. They claim to have obtained databases containing the names of the company's customers.
“Sorry @TangoMe,we needed your database, thank you for that!” the team posted on Twitter.
“Sorry @TangoMe, We needed your database too, thank you for it!”
In a blog post, the hackers claim to have obtained phone numbers, email addresses and other contact information for millions of users. They have also downloaded 1.5TB of daily backups.
"Much of the information we have from the databases will be handed over to the Syrian government," they said.
The Syrian Electronic Army group told EHacking News that they managed to hack the website by exploiting a vulnerability in the outdated WordPress installation used by Tango.
Following the breach, the company has shut down all four of its servers, the hackers say. Tango.me is currently redirecting its visitors to the company's Facebook page.
There are no official statements from the company.
