When it comes to iOS devices, Apple is a bit like Henry Ford: "You can have it in any color you want, as long as it's either white or black."
With the iPod touch refresh in 2012, Apple first showed its willingness to add color to iOS devices. Since then, it was only a matter of time before rumors began circulating about a colored iPhone 5S that would make its debut this year.
The above concept, by Alexander Kormishin, shows what he imagines the colored iPhone 5S will be like, but he makes a big mistake. And we explain below.
The main problem with Kormishin's concept has to do with the fact that he believes Apple will change the design of the iPhone 5S. Something we're pretty sure won't happen.
Why? Because there's a reason Apple changes the design every two years. A change to the design of its most popular smartphone requires months of research and millions of dollars in testing, while also introducing new problems to its production line. It takes a long time to perfect a device as complex as an iPhone for mass production. And Apple doesn't intend to just change the design of a device like that if it doesn't have to.
So, even if the iPhone 5S comes in different colors, its design will remain the same.
The iPhone 5s in the photo have been modified by a company called Anostyle, and they show what it would look like if Apple had decided to release the iPhone 5 in different colors. This is what the iPhone 5S could look like, with the aluminum parts colored, while the glass parts would remain either white or black.
The biggest problem with releasing iPhones in different colors would be the glass. Apple had a hard time releasing the white iPhone 4 in the past. The problem was trying to prevent light from leaking through the glass into the device's camera, a problem that took 10 months to solve.
And since we don't think Apple wants to go through the same thing again with a colored iPhone 5S, what it might do is change the color on the aluminum and leave the existing one on the glass.
Of course, just because there's a solution for a colored iPhone doesn't mean they'll actually do it. Maybe Apple will decide to make such a move with the iPhone 6, or maybe they'll never do it and leave the black and white. However, if the rumors are true and the iPhone 5S comes in different colors, then there's only one way to do it.
