What do you do when you've had too much to drink? Most people, even though they enjoyed it the night before, curse the time and the moment the next day. Others declare that they will never drink again! Yes, yes ok!
An MIT researcher at Media Labs, Dhairya Dand on November 23, literally experienced an alcohol blackout after just three drinks, and woke up in the hospital the next day.
The next day, instead of making statements like "I'm not putting that in my mouth again" etc., Dand created a device that could help him next time. All he has to do is not forget to take the ice cube with him.
The device is still under development and is made up of an ATtiny microcontroller, a cell battery, and an infrared transceiver, TNW reports. All of this is placed in a gelatin ice cube. The microcontroller counts the number of sips per drink. The best part is that if the limit is breached, signals from the infrared transmitter alert Dand's phone, which sends a text message to a friend. The text message apparently says, "I did it again, come pick me up.".
Dand's patent could probably find many applications in our everyday lives. Bottles, cups, and even ice cubes with an embedded chip are no longer a product of science fiction.
