Skype for Linux is finally available

It's been a while since Microsoft released the latest update for Skype for Linux, but the software giant has finally pressed the green button for version 1.6, which brings with it several improvements and a few new features.

Specifically, Skype 1.6 for Linux, which is still in Alpha development, comes with the ability to paste files from the clipboard, making sharing files with your contacts even easier. What else does this new version have? It adds emoticon settings, and you can find them all in the Messaging section of Settings, as well as options to unpin your favorites from recent conversations on your screen.

While the free calling program for Linux has certainly improved, there are some key features still missing from the client and it's not yet clear when or if Microsoft plans to make them available.

In terms of fixes, Skype for Linux 1.6 fixes the messaging service and in this version, group chat names will not automatically be converted to lowercase after editing.

For example, there is still no option to rename your contacts.

Time will tell if this feature and others will be added to Skype for Linux.
