WhatsApp will withdraw support for old smartphones

WhatsApp

WhatsApp won't work on old Nokia, BlackBerry, Android smartphones and iPhone 3GS

If you still own a Nokia ExpressMusic or iPhone 3GS, you won't be able to chat on WhatsApp by the end of this year. WhatsApp, the most popular cross-platform messaging app, has started notifying the following smartphone users that the messaging app will stop working on the platform on December 31.

Earlier this year, the Facebook-owned app announced that it would end support for several mobile operating systems starting in 2017, including Nokia's Symbian.

A pop-up message is now appearing to every Symbian OS user, "Unfortunately, you will not be able to use WhatsApp after 12/31/2016, as it will no longer support your phone."

The company, in a blog post, has clearly stated that by the end of 2016, WhatsApp Messenger support will end for mobile platforms such as BlackBerry (including BlackBerry 10), Nokia S40, Nokia Symbian S60, Android 2.1 and Android 2.2, Windows Phone 7.1 and iPhone 3GS / iOS 6.

It is believed that these outdated operating systems do not offer the kind of capabilities needed to expand WhatsApp's features in the future.

WhatsApp announced the end of support for Symbian last February, along with BlackBerry. The messaging service had suggested that users get a newer Android device, iPhone or Windows Phone before the end of 2016 to continue using WhatsApp.

Since, there would be no more updates and security patches provided by WhatsApp, using the messaging service on older smartphones could pose a threat to their security later on.

If you are using one of the above phones, we recommend that you upgrade to a newer Android, iPhone or Windows Phone device before the end of 2016 to enjoy seamless WhatsApp service.

Smartphones that will not have WhatsApp support from 01/01/2017 are:

BlackBerry, including BlackBerry 10

Nokia S40

Nokia Symbian S60

Android 2.1 and Android 2.2

Windows Phone 7.1

iPhone 3GS / iOS 6
