Facebook allows videos as comments and SMS via FB Messenger

Facebook is getting ready for some big changes. You can now add videos to comments on your timeline as well as to posts on Facebook. The social networking service gives users the ability to upload videos to comments as replies to posts and updates . The feature was first introduced at Facebook’s 50th Hackathon earlier this year. The feature gives you the ability to upload a video to comments.

According to Facebook product engineer Bob Baldwin, video comments are supported on desktop web, iOS, and Android. Videos can be uploaded in response to messages from others.

Baldwin explained that "it's no small feat to add cross-platform support to two heavily trafficked services like comments and videos." Facebook is also working on bringing SMS support to its Facebook Messenger app for Android smartphones.

To post a video response on Facebook, you need to tap the camera icon in the comment box below the post, which will then connect to your smartphone's camera library, allowing you to share a video you've taken. Facebook Live launched last year and was rolled out to users in the US in January and outside the US in February.

A new video tab has replaced the icon in Messenger on iOS and Android. Messenger notifications have been moved to the top of the Facebook app near search. Facebook has also just launched the ability to post 360 photos.

The social networking company unveiled a high-end virtual reality camera in April that captures 360-degree video in 3D.

Facebook expects the new feature to encourage more people to share their videos, making them more comfortable as a form of communication. This in turn could encourage users to adopt Facebook Live, and start using it more often.
