The Solus, which is still in the experimental stage, is getting closer and closer to a stable release and its developers are slowly starting to showcase the capabilities of the operating system, including its boot time, which is its most impressive feature.
It's been a while since users have cared about boot time in Linux distributions. Since SSDs started appearing, boot time has become less of a concern. Also, many users have plenty of RAM, which helps to make their computers boot even faster. Yet, the developers of Solus managed to boot it in 1.2 seconds!
In fact, just a few weeks ago, Solus developers were working to achieve a boot time of less than 3 seconds and that was a real achievement, but the fact that they managed to get the boot time even lower shows how good and coordinated the work is.
But what is solus?
Solus is a Linux built from the ground up and using a new desktop environment called Budgie. If the name of the distribution sounds familiar, that’s because there was an older Linux distribution called Solus OS. The current project is made by the same developers, with the only difference being that the “OS” has been removed from the name.
The development cycle for Solus is almost over, and there are only a few months left until a stable release. The developers are still tweaking the operating system and trying to keep everything up to date before the stable release. For example, Solus is one of the few distributions that will have the latest Linux kernel almost immediately after its release.
