The new firmware update fixes a security vulnerability in the devices' SOAP API.
To upgrade the software of wireless routers and to permanently get rid of the problems created by this specific security gap, you should follow the following procedure.
To get started, you should connect the router to your computer, preferably via Ethernet: It is best to avoid upgrading software via a wireless connection, which is not as stable.
Next, in case you have changed your router settings and want to keep them after the upgrade, you should create a backup, recording all changes made to the default values (which you will need to re-enter after the upgrade).
After extracting the necessary file, log in to the router's administration page. From there, go to Advanced Tab → Administration → Firmware Upgrade → Browse, browse and select the firmware file from the folder you saved it in, starting the installation process.
Even if the process seems simple, we should keep in mind that during installation, turning off or restarting the device can lead to an update failure, which could corrupt the router's software or even render it unusable.
The new firmware version (NETGEAR WNR2000v4 Router Firmware 1.0.0.60) is available for download via the company's official website.
