Facebook: New Safety Check feature
If a user has declared Kathmandu or another city near the epicenter of the earthquake as their place of residence, they receive a notification asking if they are safe, so that their friends can be informed.
A new feature was activated on Facebook, a few hours after the massive earthquake in Nepal. It is called "safety check" and, as Mark Zuckerberg , it is a simple and direct way for people to notify their relatives and friends that they are okay in similar situations.
In this case, if a Facebook user has declared Kathmandu or another city near the epicenter of the earthquake as their place of residence, they receive a notification asking if they are safe. By typing in the positive, their online friends are informed about this, via a page containing information about the devastating event.
Also, everyone has the opportunity to report – provided they are obviously aware of it – that a friend of theirs is safe, so that the others can be informed.
"If you are in one of the areas affected by the earthquake, you will receive a notification asking if you are safe and if you want to check on any of your friends. When disasters happen, people want to know if their loved ones are safe. In times like these, being connected really matters. My thoughts are with everyone involved in this tragedy," the Facebook.
