Tokyo: Our new colleague is… robot!
The first day of Aiko at work.
A new "employee" has been welcomed to department store in Tokyo. Aiko Chihira, a humanoid robot, is now sitting at the reception desk.
At the beginning of the week, Aiko started work at the shopping mall and what she had to do was to direct consumers to the correct floor.
The shopping mall aims to attract publicity with Aiko's presence.
The robot was presented last year at the Ceatec technology exhibition, by Toshiba.
«Our goal is to build a robot that will gradually be able to do everything a human can. This is an excellent opportunity to see what role the humanoid can play in such an environment», said a company spokesperson.
Chihira wears a kimono, has human-like skin, can blink her eyes and smile. She can also communicate in Japanese sign language. She greets visitors in Japanese and then plays a recorded message directing them to the correct floor.
Until May 5, Chihira will be on the 7th floor of the shopping center where it will have «contact» with visitors.
