Hackers are attacking Greek iPhones

For the first time in Greece, the Cybercrime Unit is called upon to deal with a hacker attack on iPhone users' mobile phones in order to prevent citizens' personal data from being leaked onto the Internet.

Since noon on Maundy Thursday, an alarm has sounded at the Prosecution headquarters, as there have been hundreds of complaints about malicious software on the iPhones of iCloud users.

The competent authority for combating Cybercrime immediately published the warning on Twitter in order to immediately inform iPhone mobile phone users.

A detailed announcement was issued:

The Hellenic Police's Cybercrime Directorate informs internet users that an attempt has been detected to capture and intercept login details, via SMS messages, for the iCloud online service.

Specifically, the messages in question appear as the sender of the Customer Support of the company that manages the specific online service, while urging recipients to follow an email address, which refers to a website for supposedly locating a lost electronic device.

On this website, they are asked to enter the login details they use for this service in order to complete the process of finding the iPhone device.

If the recipient responds, their passwords are captured by the perpetrators, who then gain access to their personal data stored in the iCloud service (contacts, photos, videos, passwords, notes, etc.).

It is noted that these messages require great attention, as the websites to which their recipient is referred use logos of the company managing the iCloud service and appear extremely plausible.

Users who receive such messages are urged not to select the suggested hyperlinks, not to respond to them, not to enter or send personal data.

iPhone owners are upset

The message that appears if someone has fallen victim to hackers

As zougla.gr wrote from the beginning, the call center of the Electronic Crime Investigation Department has caught fire since iCloud is essentially the storage space for the personal data of the users of these mobile phones. This means that if one of these cunning people who send the software-trap to the iPhone mobile phone obtains the codes, then he has access to the photos and the phone book.

FBI and Europol in the battle to identify the perpetrators

Specialists of the service explained that this is something unprecedented in Greece and for this reason the assistance of the FBI and Europol was immediately requested in order to search for traces of the perpetrators. Although the indications lead to a former country of the Soviet Union, their detection is not easy since, as explained by officers participating in the operation, "these hackers have very good know-how."
(A message that comes in an email and tells the user that he must click on a Link in order to confirm his password on iCloud. The moment the user does so, and enters the passwords, he then falls victim to the hackers since they immediately intercept them. This is one of the methods of action)

The victim falls into the trap and is asked to pay in Bitcoin

This group of hackers, in order to secure money and organize its next attack, asks victims to pay in digital currency (bitcoin). This is done in two ways. When the user tries to log into iCloud, a message appears on their iPhone that stating if they want to avoid losing their data, they must pay 10 bitcoins, which is 5,000-6,000 euros. Another way of warning is in the victim's email, i.e. the same message to pay, but in their email.

Of course, all of the above since the codes have been intercepted.

With the same… technique, photos of Hollywood stars were leaked

It is extremely interesting that nude photos of Hollywood celebrities were leaked to the Internet using the same technique a few months ago. As a senior Hellenic Police officer told zougla.gr, "it is very likely that this is the same group.".

The leak of hundreds of photos became one of the most talked about topics in Hollywood. The material that was gradually uploaded to the Internet included hundreds of nude photos and videos of top names in the entertainment industry.

Among them are Kate Upton, Kirsten Dunst, Jennifer Lawrence, Ariana Grande, Hope Solo, Cara Delevigne and Teresa Palmer.

Although it was not the first time such material had been leaked online, it was presented as brand new and advertised as strictly inappropriate. Victims also included Rihanna and Mary Kate Olsen.
