Last month, the hacking group Lizard Squad announced its withdrawalafter carrying out a series of DDoS attacks on high-profile gaming companies.

However, the group ultimately broke its promise to back down, carrying out two more attacks on popular shoot-'em-up games from Activision Blizzard. The servers for "Call of Duty: Ghosts" and "Destiny" were taken offline as a result of the attacks.

Lizard Squad immediately claimed responsibility for the attacks via Twitter. (Here and here)

Security firm Incapsula points out that it has never been easier for hackers to launch attacks against online gaming websites, which means that such sites need to build more effective defenses against DDoS attacks.

“We are seeing more and more gaming websites being hit by DDoS attacks,” says Igal Zeifman, of Incapsula. “This trend is likely to continue for two main reasons: First, anyone can access DDoS-as-a-service solutions today, carrying out medium-sized attacks for less than $50. Second, coverage of attacks is instantaneous and widespread. For someone armed with a PayPal account, instant negative online reputation has never been easier.”
