The competent emergency services will be called automatically through the e-Call application, which will be installed in all new cars in Europe from 2017..
e-Call is an emergency service in the event of a car accident and works as follows: a mobile phone transceiver integrated into the vehicle automatically calls the emergency center for help and will communicate the exact location of the accident and the arrival of rescue teams.
The call is made through the Emergency Call Center (112) and contains data about the vehicle (vehicle type, chassis number, geographical coordinates of the vehicle's location, direction of movement, etc.), in collaboration with the General Secretariat of Civil Protection.
The activation will occur simultaneously with the deployment of the vehicle's airbags.
This will happen even if none of the passengers are able (due to injury) to talk to the center. Also, the e-Call can be activated manually by pressing a button, in order to notify the emergency center of an accident.
This is a measure designed by the European Commission and unanimously approved by the European Parliament during the Greek Presidency.
Aiming to avoid wasting the first crucial minutes
According to experts, the e-Call system aims to avoid wasting the first precious minutes, especially in cases of serious traffic accidents. Experts point out that this system could save human lives and reduce the consequences of a serious injury, as medical assistance would arrive at the scene of the accident much earlier.
With e-Call, it is estimated that, according to a European Parliament report, it could save over 2,500 human lives per year, reducing the severity of injuries by 10% to 15%.
Mandatory from 2017 onwards
Finally, as the experts noted, since the use of this specific service from 2017 onwards will be mandatory, some car manufacturers have already gradually started to provide this service, while for cars that are already in use, the installation of similar devices will be provided, at affordable prices.
The presentation of the e-call service took place during an international conference on "intelligent transport systems, e-call and road safety", within the framework of the Greek Presidency.
