Access to the social networking site Twitter has been restored in Turkey, international media reported.
Earlier today, the Telecommunications Commission announced that the Turkish government had decided to lift the block on the social networking site Twitter, which it imposed two weeks ago after corruption allegations against Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan were published online.
"We have started the process to lift the Twitter ban," a committee official told AFP.
The Constitutional Court of Turkey ruled in a decision it made yesterday that this measure constitutes a violation of freedom of expression and ordered the immediate lifting of the ban.
At the same time, the secretary general of the ruling Justice and Development Party, Haluk Ipek, had announced that the ban imposed by the Turkish government on Twitter would be lifted in the coming hours.
The social networking site was blocked on the night of March 20-21, following the order of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who decided to prevent the daily publication of corruption allegations against his government on the internet on the eve of the March 30 municipal elections.
This decision was followed by the blocking of the YouTube website a week ago, which caused a global outcry.
