Are you a fan of technology and fashion? If you have a few thousand dollars to spare, you can buy clothes that change color at will.
London fashion designer Emmy Reinbow Winters presents at the international high‑technology exhibition CES in Las Vegas a dress made of fabric that contains optical fiber.
The dress emits a sky‑blue light. However, the color can change with the touch of sensors that are embedded in the sleeve.
“If you want violet, the dress will become violet. If you prefer red, you will have red. You look at the sleeve and decide the color you want”, explains Winters.
The designer collaborates with technology experts in order to source the necessary materials for her clothing. Some react to sound, to sunlight, to water.
Another dress displayed at CES, for example, has embedded motion sensors and its color changes when the woman wearing it limps.
“If someone wears Google's glasses, they can also wear a fiber‑optic pants”, comments Winters.
Her creations are customized and have already been used in music videos and advertisements. The designer does not deal with ready-made clothing.
“These are pieces for exhibition. However, if someone has a few thousand dollars, they can acquire them,” she emphasizes.
The construction of dresses from optical fibers costs about $3,000. However, the price can increase depending on the design, according to Winters, whose creations are displayed on the website rainbowwinters.com.
