OpenAI introduces GPT-Live for more realistic chat with ChatGPT

OpenAI has unveiled GPT-Live, a new generation of voice models designed to make conversation with AI more like a real conversation with a human. GPT-Live is intended to replace the existing ChatGPT voice experience.

GPT-Live is capable of listening and speaking simultaneously, and can show that it is paying attention to its interlocutor with recognition phrases such as “hmmmm”. The model is built for continuous interaction and can make decisions about whether to speak, continue listening, pause, interrupt, or use a tool multiple times per second. This capability allows GPT-Live to dynamically adapt to the needs of the interlocutor, offering a more natural and realistic communication experience.

“Chatting with ChatGPT should now feel much more like a real conversation. You can interrupt with a question, pause to gather your thoughts, or ask ChatGPT to slow down. It naturally recognizes what you’re saying with phrases like “mmm” or “I get it,” so you know it’s following you. We’ve also reconfigured the nine distinct voices in ChatGPT for GPT-Live, offering a variety of options that can be customized to the user’s preferences,” the company says.

OpenAI claims that GPT-Live is most intelligent voice model to date, using the latest state-of-the-art model (currently GPT–5.5) for web search, deep reasoning, and complex tasks. This means that GPT-Live is not just a communication tool, but can perform complex tasks while continuing the conversation, delivering the results as soon as they are completed.

This feature is especially useful for users who need immediate information or analysis during their conversation.

OpenAI is now rolling out GPT-Live–1 and GPT-Live–1 mini to ChatGPT users worldwide. GPT-Live–1 is the default for Go, Plus, and Pro users, while GPT-Live–1 mini is the default for Free users. This distinction allows OpenAI to offer different levels of service based on user needs and capabilities, ensuring that everyone can benefit from the new features of GPT-Live.

ChatGPT users can tap the Voice to talk to ChatGPT and use GPT-Live. While GPT-Live does not yet support voice with video or screen sharing in ChatGPT, OpenAI is working to add this feature soon. This future upgrade could further expand the capabilities of GPT-Live, enabling more comprehensive and interactive communication experiences.
