The news that the maker of Mac computers, iPhones and iPads has acquired PrimeSense for $350 million is raising questions about how Apple plans to use its real-world image capture technology. The Israeli company's 3D technology helped create Kinect, the system that accompanies Microsoft's game console and allows users to play with their bodies as controllers.
The news of the acquisition was announced by Bloomberg on Sunday. Apple confirmed the deal to Israel Radio. PrimeSense was founded by a group of young people who acquired the necessary expertise in an elite army unit, the Jerusalem Post reports on its website.
Watch two videos that illustrate the purpose of PrimeSense, which "gives the gift of vision to devices," as it describes itself. The Sense 3D Scanner scans any object (or even people) in three dimensions and, with the help of accompanying software, can print copies on a 3D printer.

PrimeSense's technology is also behind the Vuforia Smart Terrain software that has been integrated into tablets by Qualcomm, and allows the player to scan the space around them to create a virtual 3D world with heroes also scanned games. Watch the video:
