We've all been following the NSA for months, more or less, with most of the stories coming from journalists around the world. Now, Snowden has taken a small step forward and published a letter of his own, in the German newspaper Der Spiegel.
In a letter titled “A Manifesto for the Truth,” the whistleblower speaks about the NSA and its British counterpart and their desire to continue mass surveillance without oversight.
"The world has learned a lot in a short time about the irresponsible operation of intelligence agencies and, at times, illegal surveillance programs. Sometimes organizations deliberately try to avoid the high-ranking officials or the public they control," wrote Edward Snowden.
He admits that, while the NSA and GCHQ appear to be the worst offenders, according to the documents released so far, mass surveillance is indeed a global problem that requires global solutions.
"These programs are not only a threat to privacy, they also threaten open societies and freedom. The existence of spying technology should not determine policy. We have a moral obligation to ensure that our laws and values limit surveillance programs and protect human rights," Snowden writes.
According to the German magazine, the letter was sent on Friday from Moscow and through a “locked channel.”.
