The Play-i company has launched a new campaign, featuring 2 robots, Bo and Yana, which can be used together, but also independently, along with an iPad, to teach children as young as 5 years old basic programming concepts while playing with the robots.
Bo has wheels to move around the floor, and can go forward, backward, turn left and right both sharply and in a curve, as well as play sounds that you have recorded. These actions can appear as a sequence in an application – like ordered commands in a computer. Perhaps someone programs Bo to move from the playroom to Mom’s room for her birthday and sing her a song when she arrives.
To a point, we hope that kids can translate these concepts into real-world skills that can be used outside of robots. Play-i plans to allow users to see the actual code behind a sequence they've created, much like the "view source" option in a Web browser to see the HTML code of a web page.
