Elon Musk's Top 5 Predictions for Tesla in 2025 That Didn't Come True

Another year has passed, and with it, another collection of Elon Musk’s ambitious timelines that didn’t align with reality. For those of us who have been following Tesla for years, this pattern is all too familiar. 2025 was billed as the year of massive expansion, widespread autonomy, and humanoid robots.

Now that the year is almost over, let's take a look at Musk's top 5 predictions for Tesla that didn't come true.

2024 was Tesla’s first year of declining electric vehicle delivery volume in a decade. In late 2024, Elon Musk was confident that Tesla would return to growth in 2025. On an earnings call, he said he “forecasts 20-30% volume growth in 2025.” Even at the beginning of 2025, Tesla was talking about “returning to growth” within the calendar year, but that prospect became increasingly unlikely throughout the year.

Instead of the double-digit growth forecast, Tesla’s annual deliveries fell to about 1.64 million vehicles, down from a year earlier, according to the automaker’s latest estimates for the fourth quarter. This marks the second consecutive year of decline for Tesla, despite global electric vehicle sales rising 25% this year.

Musk’s predictions for the Robotaxi program have been particularly ambitious. In July 2025, he said, “I think we’ll probably have autonomous vehicle hailing for about half the population of the United States by the end of the year.” He had also previously claimed that Tesla would “have over a million robotaxis on the road” by 2025. He made these predictions in 2025, with better visibility into Tesla’s performance than anyone else, and yet, they didn’t come true.

Musk has been gradually lowering his Robotaxi projections throughout the year. Just a few months ago, in October, he claimed that Tesla would have “500 Robotaxi” in Austin by the end of the year. A month later, in November, he revised that number down to about 60 Robotaxi. In reality, Tesla’s “Robotaxi” fleet in Austin consists of just 30 vehicles, and most of them are not in operation most of the time and still require the presence of insurance observers inside the cars.

Elon Musk's Top 5 Predictions for Tesla in 2025 That Didn't Come True

In the summer of 2025, Musk used the X to herald what he called “the most epic demonstration ever by the end of the year.” However, we’ve heard this kind of hype before, and then Musk left us in awe. It looks like the same will be true in 2025. The craziest part of this prediction is that it was just for a “demonstration,” and Tesla had months to make it happen and never did.

Even crazier, we now know that this is related to the new Roadster, which has been delayed for 5 years. According to the latest information, Musk has talked about postponing the show to April 2026.

The Tesla Semi program has been a saga of delays. Tesla had officially guided for production to begin in 2025. However, as the end of the year approached, it became clear that this goal would not be met. In late 2025, Tesla confirmed that volume production for the electric truck had been pushed back again, this time to 2026.

At least, it looks like it will be in early 2026, but given that the vehicle was originally scheduled to launch in 2019, we better not hold our breath.

Musk had set an ambitious goal of having “thousands” of humanoid Optimus robots working in Tesla factories by the end of 2025. The CEO had even mentioned a production target of “5,000 to 10,000 Optimus robots in 2025.” We don’t have official numbers, but there’s no indication that Tesla produced thousands of the robots or even hundreds in 2025. There have been several reports from the supply chain that suggested Tesla is delaying the Optimus program, and the company has yet to reveal the latest version of the robot.

To date, Tesla has only been able to demonstrate Optimus performing very simple tasks, such as dispensing water bottles, and even then, it relied on remote control to achieve this with limited success.
