The Files by Google has already been spotted with Material 3 Expressive, but those aren't the only improvements coming to Google's file manager. The Files by Google v1.8122 beta includes code that fixes some of the quirks of the file search feature, with an upgrade that will greatly benefit users who frequently access external storage via OTG or an SD card.

Currently, when using the search feature , you can filter results by document category. However, this requires selecting the category filter (category chip) to display the options for Images, Videos, Audio , and Documents.
In the future, Google may display these options directly on the main search screen so you don't have to search for them through the category filter.

Additionally, Google may add a new category called “Other,” which will act as an umbrella category for files that don’t fall into the four main categories (Images, Videos, Audio, Documents). This wasn’t possible until now, as unchecking all options would show all files. With the new “Other” category, these four categories will be filtered out, allowing for more targeted searches for files like texts, APKs, and more.
Google may also add a new storage filter chip, which will allow users to filter search results between internal and external storage. Users will be able to choose between available storage options — in our case, the device’s internal memory and USB (OTG). If your device supports an SD card, it will likely appear as an option as well.
