Microsoft's layoffs of around 9,000 employees continue to have repercussions across its subsidiaries. According to Aftermath, up to 100 developers at Blizzard were affected, leading the studio to halt development of its mobile tower defense game , Warcraft Rumble .

In a related announcement, Blizzard said that while the game will not be abandoned entirely, the company will stop developing new content. "Going forward, we will continue to support Rumble with updates that focus on regular, systemic in-game events and bug fixes, but without new content."
Blizzard went on to say that Rumble “struggled to find its place in relation to our ambitions for its long-term success.” Despite the developers’ efforts to respond to player feedback, this “ultimately wasn’t enough to put the game on a sustainable path.”

Warcraft Rumble was the first game in the Warcraft universe designed by Blizzard exclusively for mobile devices . It was released in 2023, after nine years of development , and was originally one of two mobile projects Blizzard was working on – the other being a Pokémon Go -style approach from the company . The second game was never officially announced and was canceled sometime in 2022.

Warcraft Rumble now joins the list of Blizzard games that have been put on hiatus, along with Starcraft II and Heroes of the Storm.

Earlier today, Xbox also announced the cancellation of Everwild , which was being developed by Rare, as well as the Perfect Dark remake, while The Initiative , the studio that had been developing it, was also closed
