Apple is opening a new research lab in Shenzhen , China , expanding its research and development capabilities in the world's largest smartphone market. The facility began operations on Thursday.
Apple announced its plans for the Shenzhen lab in March, saying it would boost testing and research for major products including the iPhone, iPad and Vision Pro. The lab is also intended to strengthen Apple's collaboration with local suppliers.

Built on an area of 20,000 square meters, the lab is set to become Apple's research and development hub in the wider region. This region includes Hong Kong, Macau and nine cities in Guangdong province.
According to state media, the lab will employ more than 1,000 people (from China and elsewhere). Apple described it as its largest lab outside the United States, underscoring the importance of the Chinese market to the company.
It is worth noting that Apple has faced some difficulties in China recently, due to increased competition from domestic companies. Huawei has managed to win back the audience. Recent data from research firm CINNO showed that in August, Huawei surpassed Apple's sales in mainland China for the first time in nearly four years.
