Google began working on a foldable Pixel Fold phone in 2020. However, at the time, Samsung was already on the Galaxy Z Fold 2 and Chinese competitors had not yet released the impressive phones with flexible screens like they do now.

However, building an exciting foldable phone proved more difficult than initially envisioned, and not just because the material at the time didn't allow for the teardrop hinges that are now the norm.
Google also had to think about software tweaks that would make Android take advantage of the larger screen that can be folded in half and find ways to stand out from other foldable phones.
Google had the right design for the Pixel Fold
The Pixel Fold that Google originally envisioned turned out to be more distinctive and unique than what the company released last year, as a retail device sold in the Google Store.
One of the original Pixel Fold prototypes codenamed “Pipit” has surfaced, likely from 2020, and is different from what we now see as the actual Pixel Fold.
The freshness of Google's design is visible in both the final product and the prototype, but the Pixel spirit is better conveyed by the original effort from Google's (or HTC) design team.

It's reminiscent of what started with the Pixel 6, something that will be instantly recognizable and carry the brand with it like the iPhone or Dynamic Island.
All of the original Pixel Fold cameras and accompanying accessories on this model are housed in a strip on the back that asymmetrically splits the body in a two-tone pattern. This is actually one of the most welcome new phone designs in recent memory.
The design isn't different just for the sake of it. The neat combinations of sensors and lenses can't easily take photos of your fingers or eliminate the ultra-wide perspective like a camera placed on one side of the back would. Plus, there's plenty of room for your index finger to rest on while using the phone one-handed.
Finally, this strip is unique in appearance and blends into the back without protruding, despite being raised. Furthermore, it is a design with numerous two- and three-color combinations of the Pixel Fold to keep its appearance fresh and adaptable to every taste.
