The majority of people choose to use smartphones in a vertical position, as holding it with just one hand is more convenient.

While holding your device horizontally may seem less secure, there are times, like when watching videos, when horizontal use becomes preferable due to the wider view. Based on information from Android Authority's Mishaal Rahman, Google is making changes in Android 15, recognizing and responding to the preferences of users who want to use their devices horizontally.

As Rahman points out, rotating the lock screen is not possible on stock Android 14. While you can rotate the notification page to landscape, you’ll find that notifications take up about 70% of the space in this layout. However, the width of each notification uses less than half of the available space for it, leaving a lot of unused space. Additionally, the overall appearance of the page may not be particularly appealing, as the top section consists of four Quick Settings arranged in a row.
In the current horizontal position of the notification page, a downward swipe is enough to reveal options that are initially hidden such as the brightness adjustment at the top, the settings shortcut, access to the functions menu, Quick Settings, and the edit icon
Google upgrades the user experience by turning the notification page into a horizontal layout, thus utilizing all available space. Previously hidden indicators now remain always visible, allowing quick access when needed. The new layout displays four buttons for Quick Settings in a 2 x 2 arrangement, with the brightness control being constantly visible.
Your notifications, Quick Settings icon, power menu shortcut, settings shortcut, and other features are now visible on the screen at all times, eliminating the need for an extra swipe down to reveal them. Rahman notes that the new horizontal notification page layout brings to mind a more compact version of the notification page designed for tablets.

Rahman says that the UI for the landscape lock screen is still under development, with some minor bugs that still need to be ironed out.
